While we still have one night of preliminary battles to go, we do know who 12 of our 16 semi-finalists are.  This year’s FINALS WEEKEND will be held at The Moct, in Milwaukee’s 3rd ward.  This year’s competition and showcase will be part of the 2012 YELLOW PHONE MUSIC CONFERENCE.

Yellow Phone Music Conference (YPMC) is a four day gathering of talented artists and music professionals from all over the nation . YPMC will present engaging panel discussions and mentor sessions with experienced, respected  music business leaders from  Los Angeles, New York, and Nashville.YPMC is dedicated to bringing professionals, artists and fans together to share ideas and discover new opportunities.  Yellow Phone’s goal is to bring together career oriented artists and positive, forward-thinking leaders in today’s music business, taking the best qualities of the larger industry conferences and downsizing them into a concentrated, quality experience with powerful, pertinent takeaways. All of this happen, right here in Milwaukee.

The Miltown Beat Down has always been about the showcase.  We want this area’s unsung heroes of music, the producers, to get a stage to show their stuff.  This year’s platform is even bigger than ever before, as we will now have dozens of industry professionals in site to witness the awesomeness!  We’ve also scheduled showcases from some of the city’s best up and coming DJs, Producers and Rappers.

2012 August 23rd Battle Recap

WOW!

Another stellar night of competition last evening.  I dare say this has been the most exciting year of battles yet.  We set some new records last night, including the earliest “sell out” yet.  While there is no cover at the Jackalope Lounj, we were at capacity by 9:25 last night.  With battles beginning at 10:00pm you can imagine how many folks didn’t get in.

Professor Problems [448]vs. Cash Beatz [215]

We began the night with  a stellar performance from Professor Problem.  DJ and member of the Trauma House crew, his mix of dark and heavy beats with old school DJ battle techniques, made for a hard to beat performance.  To his credit, Cash did have some technical issues, but that’s all part of the competition. Professor Problem will be at the semi-finals, September 7th

Lex Luther [424] vs. Frequenc [399]

This battle was exciting and had a few surprises too.  2012 MTBD Champ Lex Luther was favored by the crowd during the introductions, but by the end of three rounds, the judges were at a tie.  After we added up the scores it was 3 for Lex and 3 for FreequenC.  So we had to go to a “beat off” round, but the producers were already dismissed from the stage and we had set the stage for the next battle.  So AFTER the 3 bout, we had these two back on stage for a 4 th beat.  Lex went home the winner, but not without a challenge.  Congrats to both of these fellas for bringing the HOT FIRE!
D-ski The Illeagle [454] vs. Jungle Boy[425]

Talk about diversity of sounds, this competition was two completely different style producers, who both brought their A game.  Jungle boy, had been in the 2011 MTBD, and brought some exciting beats to this round.  New comer, D-ski, had the crowd’s heads bobbin to that ol’ boom bap.  Another close battle, sees D-Ski The Illeagle heading to the semi-finals.
Jooney Dubz[491] vs. Sam Winters[502]

THE BEST BATTLE we’ve had all year! Don’t get me wrong Bubba vs. Jazzward was exciting, but this was a clean and HIGH energy, high scoring beat battle!  Jooney, came into the battle, fresh off a victory earlier that week.  He is the 2012 Drankathon Beat Battle champion, and was ready for more heads to roll.  MTBD veteran Sam Winters had a few tricks up his sleeve as well.  Jooney came with Hard hitting battle beats, while Sam’s approach was more performance based, as he rocked the OP-1 portable synth…

This battle was VERY VERY VERY close.  We went into extra rounds, and even had a judge who couldn’t decide…

@miltownbeatdown The last battle was ridiculously hard to judge. IMO, both deserved to move on. Great job to all the competitors tonight.

In the end, by a narrow margin, Sam Winters advanced to the semi-finals.  CONGRATS to both of these Milwaukee producers. AMAZING battle!

Next round will take place THURSDAY AUGUST 30th
TradeMark vs. Oh James
O.V.A. vs *hitmayng
40 Mil vs. Grandmaster O
Klassik vs. B-Luv

2012 August 16th Battle Recap

The second night for battles for the 7th annual Miltown Beat Down, did not disappoint.  We saw a wide variety of sounds, styles and battle techniques.  It all made for a great night of competition.

GOODWILL [412] VS. AD4 WATTS [355]

Goodwill was a finalist in the 2011 Miltown Beat Down, and he’s proven to be a worthy adversary.  WHile AD4 Watts had some cleaver beats, and pretty good scores in sonic quality, in the end Goodwill had a more dynamic set.

CAME ONE [452] VS. DREWCIFER [324]

New comer Came One, hit hard and fast against MTBD sophomore Drewcifer.   Now, let the record show, that Drewcifer had a multi-input set up, but hit technical prowess fell short of Came One’s funky style and classic sample technique.  We look forward to seeing what Came One brings to the semi-finals.

WHITE RUSSIAN [445] VS. BANNON [422]

Without a doubt, THE battle of the night.  White Russian is a MTBD vet, with four previous battles on his resume.  That experience helped more than a little, in this battle.  Bannon (who was in last year’s battle as DJ Heavyweight) brought some rich and full sounds to the competitions.  A little dubstep, some pop and club beats made for a dynamic round of battle.  The crowd seemed to favor White Russian, but the judges were torn, and needed a bonus round “Beat Off”.  White Russian, was prepared with a beat called “BEAT OFF”.  Needless to say, this beat was DOPE!  It put the nail in the coffin for Bannon.

JAMES JAXIN [395 VS. BROKEN BEATS [369]

Green Bay beat crew Broken Beats brought some fire to this stage with their selections, but James Jaxin proved to have a better understanding of how to present your beats in a battle arena.  His builds and track selection, just made his presentation more exciting than the Broken Beat duo.  In the end, James moves on to the semi finals at Moct, on September 7th.

For more here is our re-cap video with DJ Bizzon of The Takeover.

Next battle is  THURSDAY AUGUST 23th

Professor Problems vs. Cash Beatz
Lex Luther vs. Frequenc
D-ski The Illeagle vs. Jungle Boy
Jooney Dubz vs. Sam Winters

2012 August 9th BATTLE RECAP

WOW!

2012 Miltown Beat Down kicked off with a big night.  With a record crowd, and some one of the most exciting battles in the history of the event.

Picture courtesy of 40 Mil Productions

BATRAX [319] VS. MADDEN MILES [362]

We began last night with two Miltown Beat Down veterans, Baktrax production duo and Madden Miles (formerly MarkV).  A very close battle, these contestants were well matched.  Madden’s crowd participation and charisma helped him pull out the win

BUBBA [490] VS. JAZZWARD [535]

The most exciting battle in years.  The beats in this battle went from “oh snap”, to “on damn!”, to “AHH S#!*!!!”  The crowd was going bonkers, and demanded a beat off.  ( a beat off, is a bonus round in which each competitor gets one additional beat ).  Technical difficulties slowed Bubba down toward the end, and ultimately became his demise.  But that is the chance you take when you play your beats live, as opposed to using iTunes, like his competition did.  At the end of the night, Jazz Ward was victorious.  (I think these three should start a super production team, and become the mid-west Neptunes! )

DJ SCHIRO [386] VS. ELETE TRAX[480]

Another round of MTBD vets, saw the ominous and big sounds of Schiro, take second to the funky, dance tempos of Elete Trax.  It’s hard to battle with those low tempo beats, and Elete exploited Schiro’s technique with some very pop ready jams.

BEAT HOUZING GROUP [338] VS. REASON [489]

2011 champ Reason has always proven to be a difficult competitor to face.  I felt he actually took it easy on BHG.  Beat Houzing had a bit of technical difficulty as well, but that’s all part of the competition.  Reason ended the night victorious, but actually got a lower score than Bubba.  That’s how these bracket style tournaments go.

Here is a re-cap with myself and Bizzon.

We are back next week at the Jackalope with the following battles…

THURSDAY AUGUST 16th
Goodwill vs. Ad 4 Watts
CameOne vs. Drewcifer
White Russian vs. Bannon
James Jaxin vs. BrokenBeats

Get there early, because we saw many turned away at the door this past week.

Each night will have 8 producers, and from that 8, the four winners that emerge to move on to the semi-finals on Friday, September 7th at Moct Milwaukee (240 E. Pittsburgh) 21+ Venue
Of those 16 semi-finalists, 8 will be accepted into the finals the next night, Saturday, September 8th

Each battle is a head to head competition, judged by both the audience, and a panel of judges.
